How was it born?
Yacuma Ecolodge is a joint ecotourism initiative of the rainforest community of Chontayacu and Pamir Travels Group in Ecuador.
The Ecolodge created in 1995, provides employment opportunities through nature-based eco-tourism.
The goal at the outset of the Yacuma project was to create a viable ecotourism lodge that was wholly owned and operated by local
Ecuadorian managers and staff. To accomplish this, Pamir trained villagers in a broad range of activities, including house keeping,
food preparation and tours guiding. Today, 15 families receive regular direct economic benefits from employment and management
of the ecolodge. They also receive indirect benefits from the sale of crafts that are made in a sustainable manner.
Yacuma Ecolodge allows villagers to benefit economically from living in harmony with the forest in many ways. In addition to lodge
management, for instance, villagers work in sustainable agriculture, handicraft activities and sell non-timber forest products.
During their visit to Yacuma Ecolodge, tourists will have the opportunity to discover the Great Napo River and the Yacuma Protected
Forest Reserve through the eyes of the Chontayacu Indigenous community. An experience worthwhile!.
One of the most important projects, developed by the Pamir Group, is the Chontayacu Indigenous Community School. The school
was built with durable materials in order to make the stay of the kids comfortable and enjoyable. Previously they had to canoe on
Napo River for almost 1 hour to get to the nearest school. A dangerous and tiring trip.... Now days we have at the school almost 15
kids from the community and nearby families. The school is provided with comfortable and useful furniture. "The Adventure
Company", a tour operator from England, also contributed positively to the construction of the school. Pamir Group pays for the
school teacher and provides regular medical assistance for the kids and adults of the community. In addition a scholarship was
established for the best student who after finishing the basic school will get a constant economical assistance in order to continue
his/her studies at a high school in the city of Tena. Before this, the jungle kids never had such an opportunity.
